Coordinate Reference System Transformation

Important  When you import geographic features, surface representations (tri-mesh, polyline, point set) and wells (well heads and wellbores, well pads, designs) with specific file formats, the imported data CRS and the solution CRS do not have to match. In this case, a CRS transformation must be applied, which you select using the CRS Transformation dialog.

The table below shows an overview of which objects and formats can be imported with a different CRS:

  Shape file JOA Custom Petrel™
BHI
Well Survey
Schlumberger
Well Survey
Features
Wells
Well pads
Well designs
Tri-mesh
Polyline
Point set

The Coordinate Reference System Transformation dialog opens automatically when you are importing geographic features, surface representations (tri-mesh, polyline, point set) and wells (well heads and wellbores, well pads, designs) in one of the following situations:

Situation 1: The data CRS does not match solution CRS

  1. On the dialog, the solution CRS and the data CRS are listed. In the Transformation field the message Transformation needed is shown. To select a transformation, click the transformation icon to open the 'Select Transformation' window.
  2. On the Select Transformation window, select a transformation and click OK. The window closes and the selected transformation is now listed on the Coordinate Reference System Transformation form in the Transformation field .
  3. Click OK to continue on the import form of the object you are importing, and finalize the process. The actual transformation of the coordinate values is implemented after you click OK on the object's import form. When you are working on DMS, you follow the same procedure as described in the steps above. After the CRS has been transformed the data is imported directly to your solution.

Situation 2: The data does not have a CRS, the solution has a CRS

On the dialog, the solution CRS is listed, but the Data CRS is set to Undefined. To assign a CRS to the data, you can either:

  1. Click the Use Solution CRS button. The solution CRS is now also listed in the Data CRS field. Click OK to assign the CRS to the data and to close the dialog. The Import from of the object you are importing opens to finalize the import process.
  2. Click the Coordinate Reference System icon to open the 'Select Coordinate Reference System' window. Select a CRS from the list, you can select a geodetic CRS (using latitude and longitude) or a projected CRS (using Northing and Easting) and click OK. The window closes and the selected CRS is listed in the Data CRS field on the Coordinate Reference System Transformation dialog. Click OK to assign the CRS to the data and close the dialog. It depends on the selected CRS if a transformation is needed. If so, the message Transformation needed is shown in the Transformation field, continue with the steps in Situation 1: The data CRS does not match solution CRS section above. If not needed, the Import form of the object you are importing opens where you can finalize the process.

For both steps listed in situation 2, JewelSuite Subsurface Modeling will check the range of the data. If the selected data CRS and the data values range do not match you are prompted with a warning, but you can continue the import process.

When the data you want to import has the same datum as the solution CRS but different projection system, no transformation is required prior to import. Instead, an automatic conversion takes place for which you can find more information in the audit trail (Home > Audit Trail).
